Suspecting extra-marital affair, man throws acid on wife, stabs her
In a horrific incident, a man stabbed his wife with a screwdriver and poured acid on her on Thursday in Kolkata. The accused, identified as Jayanta Das, was arrested from the spot after passerby and shopkeepers overpowered him. His wife, whom he suspected was having an affair, is recuperating at MR Bangur Hospital. The doctors are examining the burn marks. Here's what went down.
Victim was dropping her son off, accused attacked her
The incident happened outside a primary school in Kasba in south Kolkata, where the victim had gone to drop off her five-year-old son. On Thursday, the school was celebrating its Foundation Day and several parents were waiting for the classes to begin. Just then Das came to the site and started arguing with his wife. With a screwdriver, he stabbed her too.
They got married 11 years ago, Das was suspicious
A TOI report said the victim is a resident of Bosekupar Road. She married the accused 11 years ago, and they have three kids. While the eldest son lives with Das, the younger daughter and son stayed with the victim at her parents' house. Das, an electrician by profession, suspected the wife had an illicit affair and constantly fought with her over this.
Victim's son also suffered minor injuries
About the incident, Joint CP (crime), said it happened around 11:45 am. When the victim tried to evade Das' screwdriver attack, he threw acid on her. The victim told police the liquid was muriatic acid, usually used to clean bathrooms. Her son also suffered some minor injuries and was discharged after an examination. A woman and her child managed to escape the attack.
A parent said victim got her son enrolled recently
Das was caught by irate parents. One of them said, "We saw the couple arguing on RK Chatterjee Road, about 100 meters from school. We had not noticed the victim as it was only in January this year that she had enrolled her son." The eye-witness said Das hit the victim on her head. "The woman started bleeding profusely," the parent revealed.
Another parent said Das threw acid twice
Another guardian, Purnima Ghosh, said the victim screamed and ran towards the school to save herself after acid was thrown. "At least 30 parents were waiting in front of the main gate. The accused then filled plastic with acid and threw it at the woman again. She almost fainted," Ghosh added. She suffered injuries on her shoulder and face, Ghosh claimed.
The victim's condition is stable, said police
During interrogation, Das told police he wanted to "teach his estranged wife a lesson" for having extra-marital affair. "The acid injuries were not much but she had deep stab injuries on the back of her head," police said. Das was booked under IPC Sections 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and 326A (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by use of acid).
