'She wanted to become MD gold medalist': Kolkata doctor's mother
The mother of the 31-year-old doctor who was allegedly raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata wrote an emotional open letter on Teachers' Day. In the letter, she shared her daughter's lifelong dream of becoming a doctor to heal as many people as possible. She also expressed gratitude to the teachers who inspired and guided her daughter toward achieving this dream.
Mother credits teachers for daughter's success
The mother credited her daughter's success to her teachers, stating that while the parents did their best to support her, it was "because of great teachers like you that she was able to realize her dream of becoming a doctor." She also shared a conversation about her daughter's motivation, "My daughter used to say, 'Ma, I don't need money. I just want to earn many degrees and help as many patients as possible.'"
Mother recounts tragic day of daughter's murder
She painfully recalled the day her daughter was murdered while on duty, stating that she had treated several patients before her life was brutally cut short. She revealed that her daughter had plans to become an MD gold medalist, a dream tragically left unfulfilled due to the horrific incident. A diary found near the body further confirmed the doctor's ambition of winning prestigious honors in her medical career.
Family alleges police misconduct and evidence tampering
The family had joined protests at RG Kar Hospital, accusing the police of offering them money while they were mourning their loss. They also alleged that a "senior police officer had attempted to bribe them following the acknowledgement of the incident." The mother further claimed that steps were taken by hospital authorities and administration to destroy all evidence after the horrific incident on August 9.
CBI investigation and new anti-rape bill
The Calcutta High Court later directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate the murder. On Monday, the CBI arrested Dr. Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, in connection with alleged financial misconduct at the institution. Meanwhile, West Bengal Assembly has passed a state anti-rape bill seeking capital punishment for rape convicts if their actions result in the victims' death or leave them in a vegetative state.
