'I'm being framed': Kolkata rape-murder accused breaks down in court
Sanjoy Roy, the accused in the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, broke down before a judge, claiming he was incocent. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had presented Roy before the court on Friday, seeking permission for a polygraph test, as it can only be conducted with the court's and suspect's consent.
Accused consents to polygraph test in court
When asked why he was agreeing to the polygraph test, Roy broke down in court, according to The Times of India. Roy told the court that he consented to the polygraph test because he believes in his innocence. "I haven't committed any crime. I'm being framed. Maybe this test will prove that," Roy was quoted as saying by The Times of India.
Accused claims innocence, hopes polygraph will prove it
The court granted the CBI permission for the lie detection test to be conducted on Roy, and sent him to 14 days of judicial custody. It also granted permission for a polygraph test on the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, and five others linked to the case. These individuals include four doctors who dined with the deceased doctor on the night of her murder.
Details emerge about the night of the crime
The trainee doctor was raped and murdered inside a seminar hall at the hospital on August 9. Police later reported finding multiple lacerations and wounds on her body, indicating a brutal attack. Roy was arrested a day after the crime. CCTV footage showed him entering the building around the estimated time of the crime, and his Bluetooth headphones were found near the crime scene.
