Drunk Kolkata civic volunteer rams bike into RG Kar protester
A civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police was arrested on Saturday after reportedly hitting a protesting student with his motorcycle while under the influence of alcohol. The incident took place during a protest over the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The accused, identified as Gangasagar Golde, reportedly struck one of the protesters with his bike.
Protesters demand action against accused volunteer and traffic sergeant
Following the incident, a complaint was also lodged against Traffic Sergeant Tarakeshwar Puri. Puri was seen arguing with the protesters after they surrounded Golde's motorcycle. The protesters claimed that Puri aided Golde in escaping from the scene as a large crowd gathered. They blocked the busy BT Road early Saturday morning and staged a sit-in protest against the police, demanding immediate action against Golde and Puri.
Protests continued until around 9:30am
The protests continued until around 9:30am on Saturday and were only called off after news surfaced that Golde had been arrested. A departmental inquiry has been initiated against Puri, while Golde has been removed from his position. To recall, Sanjoy Roy, the accused arrested in the rape and murder of the trainee doctor, was also a civic volunteer attached to Kolkata Police.
Governor in 'fast-track mode' to address RG Kar case
Meanwhile, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has stated that he is in "fast-track mode" to address requests from the parents of the victim in the RG Kar case. "On receipt of a heart-wrenching letter from the parents of the victim...Governor rushed to Delhi and presented their grievances before the Home Minister," a statement read. The governor also informed Union Home Minister Amit Shah about the seriousness of the situation and public protests against this horrific incident.
