JNU student Umar Khalid attack-case: Anti-terror unit takes it up
On Tuesday, Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik transferred the case pertaining to the alleged attack on JNU student Umar Khalid's life to its anti-terror unit, the Special Cell. Notably, the same unit is probing sedition charges against Khalid and his JNU mates, Kanhaiya Kumar and Anirban Bhattacharya, and is yet to file a chargesheet in the case. Here's more.
Delhi Police have confirmed that the attack wasn't staged
The move comes soon after the Delhi Police confirmed that the attack on Khalid was not staged, and had actually taken place. Notably, the suspected attacker, as yet unidentified, has already been caught on CCTV footage multiple times. The investigators, based on footage, have come up with a route map which they believed the suspect followed after the attack.
Where investigators believe the attacker went
After fleeing from the Constitution Club where the alleged attack took place, the attacker tried to hide at Suchna Bhawan, but emerged soon after and started walking with a handkerchief covering his face. CCTV footage showed him walking towards Patel Chowk at a brisk pace before he turned left at Bangla Sahib Gurdwara, and waved to someone, possibly an accomplice.
Details of the attack on Umar Khalid
Meanwhile, ToI, after having viewed Khalid's FIR, reported details of the attack. The FIR says that Khalid and his friends, Jyotsna, Khalid Saifi, and Sadiq Hussain, had reached the Constitution Club at 2:07pm, and had come out later for refreshments when the attack took place. The attacker had pushed Khalid to the ground from behind, and had pointed the gun when his friends intervened.
The attacker tried running away when Khalid's friends intervened
After his friends intervened and tried to stop the attacker from shooting, the gunman allegedly tried running away, following which Umar Khalid and Sadiq Hussain tried to give chase. However, after a gun shot rang out from the other end of the road, the duo retreated into the club, and Khalid Saifi dialled 100 to summon the police to the spot.
