The Aadhaar Case: Petitions challenging Aadhaar's constitutional validity
The Supreme Court is likely to pronounce its verdict on a batch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the 2016 Aadhaar Act.
The top court will decide whether constitutional provisions need Aadhaar and if the government can continue it as a mandatory identification in the name of its welfare goals.
Aadhaar has been criticized by many as an intrusive instrument.
The SC/ST angle
Reservation in promotions for the SC/ST employees
Another important verdict will be on the 2006 judgment of granting quota benefits in job promotions for SC/ST employees.
The 2006 verdict in the M Nagaraj case, had said the states are bound to provide data on the backwardness of SC/ST, their inadequate representation in government jobs, and the overall efficiency, before providing quota in promotions.
The Center had demanded reconsideration in the verdict.
Llive streaming
Live streaming of court proceedings
A clutch of petitions seeking live streaming and video recording of court proceedings might also be addressed today by the top court.
The apex court had reserved its verdict, on August 24, and said implementing the concept of "open court" will decongest the courtrooms and had termed the proposal of live streaming the proceedings as the "need of the hour".
If conviction stayed
Membership revival of legislators
The top court will pronounce a judgment on whether the stay on the conviction of a disqualified lawmaker by a court would revive his or her membership of the House.
The apex court in its verdict on July 23 had said that a lawmaker, whose conviction in a criminal case has not been stayed by a tribunal, would stand disqualified from the membership.
Ayodhya & Adultery
The other two major verdicts
The apex court is also likely to deliver two major verdicts this week, on Ayodhya and adultery.
It will resume hearings in the Babri Masjid case on September 28 and decide whether the matter should be referred to a larger bench and if it involves constitutional questions.
Another verdict will be on pleas challenging the constitutional validity of adultery and to make it gender-neutral.
