Absconding rape accused traced to UAE, deported to India
The United Arab Emirates has deported a rape accused from Kerala, Muhamed Hafis Vattaparambil Umer, against whom an Interpol Red Notice was issued on the CBI's request, officials said. After a successful operation by the International Police Cooperation Unit (IPCU) of the CBI and National Central Bureau of Abu Dhabi, Umer was traced in the UAE from where he was deported to India.
CBI arrested Umer and handed him over to state police
"Upon his arrival on Monday, the CBI arrested Umer who was wanted by the Malappuram district Police of Kerala, and handed him over to the state police," the officials said.
Umer raped a woman several times on pretext of marriage
"It is alleged that Umer had raped a woman on December 24, 2017, at a railway retiring room of Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala," the officials said. "He later repeated the act at the railway restrooms and a rented house in Thrissur, Palakkad, and Shoranur on different occasions on the promise of marrying her," they further said.
He later fled to UAE; CBI alerted Interpol
"Umer had allegedly gone back on the woman's promise and fled to the UAE following which a case was registered against him at Ponnani Police Station, Malappuram district," the officials said. On the request of the Kerala Police, the CBI alerted the Interpol which had issued a Red Notice against him on March 1, 2021.
Similar incident of rape was reported in Punjab
In a similar incident reported on April 12, a man was booked for allegedly raping a 25-year-old woman in a flat in Punjab's Zirakpur. The woman met the accused on Snapchat and alleged that in February 2020, he asked her to meet him as his parents have agreed to their marriage, according to The Times of India.
Accused threatened to leak her objectionable videos
"At the flat, he mixed a sedative in my cold drink and raped me. He also filmed and took objectionable pictures," she alleged in her complaint. Later he asked her to meet again, but when she refused, he threatened her to release the videos. She said she had filed a complaint in October 2020. A case was registered. However, the accused is absconding.
