Kerala rains: 4 dead, IMD sounds 'orange' alert
At least four people have lost their lives due to heavy rains in Kerala, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert for several districts on Thursday. The districts of Ernakulam, Thrissur, Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad are on high alert due to the forecast of continued rainfall. This orange alert serves as a warning for potential waterlogging and major traffic disruptions.
IMD issues yellow alert for additional districts
In addition to the orange alert, a yellow alert has been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Kannur, and Kasargod districts. The IMD reports that the southwest monsoon has advanced into parts of South Arabian Sea, Maldives, Comorin, and south Bay of Bengal. A cyclonic circulation over south Kerala and a low pressure area over southwest near west-central Bay of Bengal is expected to move northeastwards.
Widespread flooding and precautions amid heavy rains
The heavy rains have resulted in widespread flooding across Kerala. Areas within Cochin city corporation, houses and major roads in Ernakulam, and low-lying areas of Thrissur city have been inundated. In response to the potential for landslides and mudslides, emergency operation centers have been opened in all district collectorates and taluk offices.
Government officials issue warnings and directives
Health Minister Veena George stated on Monday that the Health Department has issued a warning to all districts about the possible outbreak of epidemics due to the ongoing heavy rains. Meanwhile, Revenue Minister K Rajan emphasized the need for strict regulations in hilly areas prone to landslides and said special directions have been given to alert tourists about the rain situation.
