Kerala: Mr India-winning Navy officer arrested for raping woman
The Kottayam (Kerala) police arrested a 38-year-old Navy officer for allegedly raping a woman, police said on Sunday. The accused, identified as Murali Kumar, is the Chief Petty Officer of Navy in Mumbai. He has also won Mr Asia title twice and Mr India title eight times. The police took action on the basis of a complaint filed by the victims' father. Here's more.
Kumar made false promises of marriage, raped woman in hotel-room
Kumar became friends with the woman on social media. He made false promises of marrying her, the victim's father alleged. Reportedly, he called the victim, in her early 20s, to a hotel in Kottayam last week and raped her. The case caught attention after the woman was admitted to a private hospital. She suffered severe injuries.
Kumar charged under relevant sections
Apart from rape, police have charged Kumar under SC/ST Atrocities (Prevention) Act. He was remanded to judicial custody on Saturday. The police will also file a report with the naval authorities about the incident.
