Kerala: Nun alleges Bishop raped her 13-times in two years
A nun in Kerala's Syro-Malabar church has accused a bishop of raping her 13 times in two years and filed a police complaint at Kuravilangad police station on Friday. The nun, a mother superior of a convent, said she complained to the church but no action was taken, hence she was forced to take the police route. Here are more details on this.
On pretext of discussing matters, Bishop raped nun in 2014
The nun alleged Jalandhar's Bishop Frank Mullakkal sexually violated her in 2014 at a guest house. He had called her to 'discuss pressing matters'. After the incident, he raped her 13 times for over two years, the complainant told Kottayam district police chief Harisankar. On complaining to the church, the authorities ripped her from the official position and accused her of financial irregularities, she alleged.
Facing rape charges, Bishop files complaint against nun
Bishop Mullakkal approached Kottayam SP saying he was forced to take action against the nun for her irregularities. In his complaint, the Bishop alleged the nun threatened him with sexual assault charges if disciplinary action against her wasn't rolled back. Sources said the Bishop's complaint preceded the nun's. SP Harisankar has directed police officials to begin probe in this case.
Earlier, priests of Kerala church allegedly assaulted woman
This case comes close on heels of a similar incident where a husband alleged his wife was sexually assaulted by five priests of Kerala's Malankara Orthodox church. However, earlier a police case wasn't registered and the church launched its independent probe. After an outcry, and on the direction of NCW, the Kerala police was later forced to act upon.
