Karti Chidambaram, in CBI custody, wants food from Zomato, Swiggy
Karti Chidambaram, the son of former finance minister P Chidambaram, who is under a five-day CBI custody since Thursday for his involvement in the INX money laundering case, has been reportedly throwing his weight around. After being refused access to home-cooked food by the court, he has been asking investigating officers to order food for him either from Swiggy or Zomato. Here's more.
Karti spoke in Tamil and not English, despite official's request
Karti told the CBI, "I hope your investigating officer will have Swiggy or Zomato to order food. I am planning to make full use of it", reported The NewsMinute. He also declined to remove his gold chains/rings. Moreover, when asked to communicate in English and not Tamil, he reportedly said, "Even you should speak in English with each other when I am there".
Meanwhile, what is the INX money laundering case?
In 2007, INX had brought in Rs. 305cr through foreign investment, even though FIPB had given approval for only Rs. 4.62cr. Apparently, Karti, son of former finance minister P Chidambaram, influenced FIPB to allow the investment. For this, he purportedly received Rs. 90cr from INX as "consultancy charges." INX Media was formerly owned by Peter and Indrani Mukerjea.
Karti yet to answer 'basic questions'
The Patiala House Court in Delhi granted Karti's custody to the CBI after the central investigative agency claimed he was yet to answer 'basic questions' regarding his role in the INX media case. On his return from the United Kingdom, Karti was arrested at the Chennai Airport in connection with a police complaint filed against him on May 15, 2017.
