Navy officer's daughter becomes youngest Indian to scale Mount Everest
Kaamya Karthikeyan, a 16-year-old student from Mumbai, has set a new record by becoming the youngest Indian and the second youngest girl globally to scale Mount Everest from the Nepal side. Kaamya set off on the journey to Everest on April 3, accompanied by her father, Commander S. Karthikeyan of the Indian Navy, and arrived at the summit on May 20.
Karthikeyan's journey to the top begins
Inspired by her father's mountaineering pursuits, she started trekking at the tender age of three. Her Himalayan endeavors commenced in 2015 with a trek to Chandrashila Peak. Over the years, Kaamya progressed to more challenging treks such as Har-ki Dun, Kedarkantha Peak, and Roopkund Lake in 2016. At 13, she trekked to the Everest Base Camp, becoming the second youngest girl worldwide to achieve this milestone. In 2019, she conquered Brighu Lake and traversed the Sar pass in Himachal Pradesh.
Karthikeyan's future endeavors: The '7Summits Challenge'
In 2020, Kaamya had also set another record by becoming the youngest girl in the world to climb Mount Aconcagua, the highest peak in South America and outside of Asia. Her next goal is to scale Mount Vinson Massif in Antarctica this December to become the youngest girl to accomplish the "7 Summits Challenge." Kaamya is a Class 12 student from Navy Children School in Mumbai.
