Justice Ranjan Gogoi appointed next CJI by President Kovind
On Thursday, Justice Ranjan Gogoi was appointed the Chief Justice of India by President Ram Nath Kovind. He will take office on October 3, after the term of current CJI Dipak Misra ends. Notably, CJI Misra recommended his name. Justice Gogoi, who became a Supreme Court judge in April 2012, is the first Justice from North-East to hold the highest position in Indian judiciary.
CJI Misra's recommendation becomes his successor
Justice Gogoi was among four judges who held press conference
Last year, in an unprecedented press conference, Justice Gogoi along with Justices J Chelameswar, M B Lokur, and Kurian Joseph, spoke about SC's problems. The Justices alleged important cases were handed over to junior judges, and they also spoke about the death of Justice Loya. After this, the Congress-led Opposition moved an impeachment motion against CJI Misra, which Vice President Venkaiah Naidu rejected.
Looking at important matters which Justice Gogoi handled
With Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman, Justice Gogoi monitored the Assam NRC. In 2016, he issued a contempt notice to former Supreme Court judge Markandey Katju for 'attacking judges and not judgement' in Soumya rape and murder case. He gave the judgement in infamous Aarushi murder case and dismissed plea for probe into the attack on former JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar.
Justice Gogoi's tenure will end in November, 2019
Reportedly, Justice Gogoi's term as CJI will end on November 17, 2019. CJI Misra maintained the long-standing tradition of recommending the name of the senior-most judge as his successor. In a letter to law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad which he had sent earlier this month, CJI Misra wrote, "I recommend Justice Gogoi as my successor to the post of Chief Justice Of India".
