5 junior doctors present during Kolkata rape victim's autopsy: Report
A newly released document reveals that five junior doctors were present during the post-mortem examination of a 31-year-old trainee doctor raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. This team was formed to ensure transparency and monitor irregularities. To recall, the autopsy sparked protests from doctors, who alleged misconduct during the examination. Junior doctors voiced concerns about the process's transparency, accusing authorities of manipulating evidence and issuing a flawed report.
'Present during autopsy...': Document
The emergence of a new document has raised questions about these claims. The document, which has gone viral on social media, confirms that five junior doctors—one house staff and four postgraduate trainees—were present during the autopsy to ensure its integrity. "We were present during the autopsy, and we are satisfied," the document states, bearing the signatures of all five doctors, including two from the gynecology department, one from neurology, and Dr Apurba Biswas, head of the forensic medicine department.
Protests continue
On Tuesday, junior doctors in Bengal have resumed a total "cease work," demanding that the government ensure their safety and security at hospitals. This decision was made after an eight-hour-long meeting. The West Bengal Junior Doctors's Front stated, "Unless we receive clear action from...government on safety, patient services, and the politics of fear...have no choice but to continue our full strike." The junior doctors had partially resumed their duties at government hospitals on September 21 after a 42-day protest.
