Scribe killings: CBI books 3 IPFT-leaders, 300-500 activists in Tripura
CBI has booked three Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) leaders, along with 300-500 members of the political party in Tripura, after taking over the probes into the killings of two journalists in the state last year, officials said. The agency booked Balram Deb Barma, Dhirendra Deb Barma, leaders of IPFT, allies of BJP, and Amit Deb Barma, President of the party's Mandwi divisional-committee.
About the killing of the two scribes
Santanu Bhowmik, a journalist from a local television channel, was killed when he went to cover a road-blockade agitation in Mandwai area of West Tripura district on September 21, 2017. Another journalist, Sudip Dutta Bhowmik, a crime reporter with a vernacular newspaper, was killed inside the headquarters of Tripura State Rifles' (TSR) 2nd battalion at RK Nagar in the same district on 20 Nov'17.
CBI filed charge-sheet in Sudip-case, yet to file in other
The trial in Sudip's murder case in the additional district and sessions judge's court was stopped following orders from the Tripura High Court. The SIT had probed the killing and filed a charge-sheet. But, it has yet to file a charge-sheet in Santanu's case. Santanu's father Sadhan Bhowmik approached HC seeking a CBI investigation, which was opposed by the then CPI(M)-led Left Front government.
