JNU, DU to get financial autonomy
Sources stated that the NITI Aayog is working on a plan to introduce sweeping reforms in the education sector. Under the plan, top ranking centrally-funded educational institutions such as JNU, Banaras Hindu University, Delhi University, Shri Ram College of Commerce, etc could receive full autonomy including in financial matters. A high-powered committee headed by NITI Aayog vice-chairman Arvind Panagariya is working on the plan.
What is the criteria for autonomy?
According to sources, institutions would be granted autonomy based upon their performance and ranking graded by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council. Those institutions which secure "A, A+ or A++" ranks would be eligible for full autonomy. The panel says that by granting these institutions autonomy, they would be able to raise resources independently and can then hire the best faculty.
Which universities are being considered?
According to sources, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University, Banaras Hindu University, Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) and Lady Shri Ram College currently fall within top NAAC rankings, and could be granted autonomy.
