Jharkhand: Meet Anu Kumari, the first matriculate from her tribal-village
No one had passed the matriculation examination in Uchwawal village of Jharkhand's Latehar district till now. This year, 18-year-old Anu Kumari scripted history. Kumari has become the first person in her village to pass the matriculation examination. She appeared for the Jharkhand Academic Council exam. Her family is ecstatic after this feat. Her story might inspire you to work hard towards your dreams too.
Anu's Uchwawal village is generations behind in development
The Uchwawal village, about 130 km away from Jharkhand's capital Ranchi, is dominated by the Parahiya tribe, who belong to the 12 primitive tribes groups (PTGs) of the state. The people of the tribe mostly rely on forest produce to support their livelihood. Tribal leader Raghupal Singh said despite the government claiming it's in focus, the village hasn't seen any concrete development since years.
The credit for Anu's success goes to her father
Anu's father Chalitar Parahiya, 42, served as a catalyst in her story and defied norms to push her toward studies. After his wife's death, daily-wage worker Parahiya had to raise his four children. In the village, girls are married off at an early age, but he ensured Anu went to school. He had sent all his kids to school, but the others dropped out.
With father and teacher's support, Anu Kumari scripts history
Anu Kumari said apart from her father, para-teacher Krishna Kumar Ram helped her too. "He not only persuaded my father to support me but also got me inducted into the local girls' residential school after passing Class 5. I owe a lot to him," she said. Ram said it was difficult to persuade Anu to join school, but once she did, she worked hard.
Now that matriculation's done, Anu hopes to become a government-servant
Anu Kumari said she wants to become an administrative officer. "She insisted on studying against the established norms and now the result is before all to see. I hope she will scale new heights," her hopeful father added.
