Just one check-in baggage on Jet Airways flights from July
Full service carrier Jet Airways has announced the first-ever restrictions in India on permissible check-in baggage on flights. From July 15, economy class passengers on the airline will only be able to check in one bag weighing 15kg or less for free. Meanwhile, 'premiere' class passengers will be allowed to carry two checked-in bags weighing 15kg or less for free.
Jet Platinum card holders can carry more baggage
Under the new rules, Jet Platinum flyers can carry two checked-in bags for free even when travelling on the economy class. Meanwhile, Platinum card holders travelling premiere can carry two checked-in bags of 25kg each. Interestingly, Jet Airways said that these restrictions had been in place for their international flights for over a year now, and that these will now apply for domestic flights.
However, there's some confusion about certain details
However, what's not clear is how the airline will handle passengers who don't follow the new baggage rules. For instance, if a passenger carries two checked-in baggage weighing 10kg and 5kg, it's not clear whether Jet Airways will charge any fee as a penalty. The Jet Airways' note to travel agents and flyers did not address this concern. What'll happen remains to be seen.
Baggage restrictions are pretty common in international flights
Although the number of baggage restrictions is a first for an Indian carrier in the domestic context, international flights generally have myriad restrictions like this. Having fewer bags to load on to the aircraft has its advantages - it ensures quicker turnaround time for an aircraft, and airlines can use the additional storage space on planes to ferry cargo and earn additional revenues.
