JEE Advanced: After government's intervention, new merit-list might be released
IIT-Kanpur may soon release a new cut off and a merit list for JEE Advanced 2018, after the MHRD asked the IIT Joint Admission Board (JAB) to issue a supplementary list. The direction was given to avoid vacancies and not compromise with the government's policy that all reserved category seats should be filled. Here are more details.
The MHRD's letter to the JAB
"It is the policy of government of India that all reservation category seats in all disciplines are filled and no vacant seats are left after counselling for admission in IITs," said a letter by the MHRD. Seat allotments will be announced from June 27.
The MHRD's unprecedented intervention aimed at eliminating vacancies
Since 2013, the number of candidates who qualified for JEE Advanced had always been twice the number of total seats available. This year, however, 18,138 candidates on the merit list are only 1.6 times the number of total seats. Hence, the MHRD intervened to ensure there are no vacancies, which have been on the rise since 2014.
Revision of cut-offs after declaration of results is a first
This is the first time in the history of JEE that cut-off marks are set to be revised after the declaration of results. The final decision will be taken in IIT JAB meeting today. In 2015, IIT-Bombay, which organized JEE Advanced that year, had lowered the bar for qualification, but the modification had come before the declaration of results.
