Jamshedpur: Man who paraded woman naked is facing rape charges
A man who was arrested on Friday for parading a tribal woman naked through a village near Jamshedpur will now also be charged with rape. The accused, one Gambhir Singh, had earlier been booked for assault, but a fresh complaint filed by the victim has prompted police to charge him with rape too. Here are the details.
The accused and the victim had been in love earlier
The incident of alleged assault and rape took place on Friday, when Singh visited the 26-year-old victim's house and forcibly took her away. Reportedly, Singh and the woman had been in love before they both got married, and had been sexually involved. However, even after marriage, Singh continued to visit her, and on Friday, things escalated.
The accused had attacked several people before raping the victim
Reportedly, Singh entered the victim's house and tried taking her away. When the victim's husband objected, Singh beat the couple up, tore the woman's clothes, and paraded her naked through the village. Allegedly, Singh also attacked some elderly village people when they objected. Subsequently, he took the victim to a nearby bush, gagged her, tied her up, and raped her.
Singh had threatened the victim's husband with a knife
In her complaints to the police, the victim had initially not pressed rape charges. However, in a fresh complaint filed with Jamshedpur's senior superintendent of police (SSP) on Monday, the victim alleged that she had been raped. She also added that Singh had a knife, and had threatened her husband with his life when he tried to stop the rape.
The Jamshedpur SSP's statement
"There was no need to add rape charge in the FIR already filed [earlier]...We will now press rape charge against the man...and pray before the court for addition of the same on the basis of victim's fresh written complaint," said Jamshedpur SSP Anoop Birthare.
