Jaishankar holds talks with Iranian, Israeli counterparts amid growing tensions
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held discussions with his counterparts from Iran and Israel amid escalating tensions between the two nations, reports said. The diplomatic talks were in response to Iran's assault on Israeli soil involving over 300 drones and missiles—a retaliation against Israel's attack on the Iranian embassy in Damascus. During telephonic conversations, Jaishankar emphasized the need for de-escalation and a return to diplomatic negotiations.
Why does this story matter?
Two days ago, Iran launched a barrage of drones and cruise missiles at Israel, marking its first direct assault on the country. This followed Iran's warning to retaliate against Israel for the killings of seven Iranians, including Major General Mohammad Reza Zahedi—the Quds Force Commander. Iran had vowed a "decisive response" after suspected Israeli warplanes struck its consulate in Damascus on April 1.

During his dialog with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Jaishankar reiterated India's desire for a "reduction in tensions" in the region. He also received a request from Iran for India to continue its support through international bodies like the United Nations Security Council and for a sustainable ceasefire in Gaza. In his discussion with Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz, Jaishankar voiced India's concerns over recent events and advocated for de-escalation.
