Tamil Nadu: ED raids multiple locations linked to ex-DMK leader
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday initiated a series of raids across over 25 locations in Tamil Nadu. This action is part of an ongoing investigation into allegations of money laundering linked to drug trafficking. The primary suspect, Jaffer Sadiq, a former member of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party and a known Tamil film producer, was previously arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).
Sadiq's arrest and alleged drug trafficking involvement
Sadiq was taken into custody by the NCB last month, following accusations of his involvement in smuggling approximately 3500 kg of pseudoephedrine. This substance, highly valued on the international market, is estimated to be worth over ₹2000crore. Following his arrest and subsequent revelations about his connections to the drug trade by the NCB, Sadiq was dismissed from the DMK party in February.
ED's investigation spreads across Tamil Nadu
The ED's investigation has led them to various cities including Chennai, Madurai, and Tiruchirapalli. Sadiq's properties were among those searched under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The operation was carried out with the support of central paramilitary forces. The properties of film director Ameer and others were also included in these raids.
