Yet another minor raped in J&K days after horrific #BandiporaRape
In yet another case of rape of a minor in Jammu & Kashmir, a teenage girl was sexually assaulted by a 20-year-old man in Ganderbal district. The police arrested the accused, Muhammad Aasif Wani, after the victim's family filed a complaint on 12 May. This comes only days after the rape of a three-year-old in Bandipora that sparked shock and massive outrage. Here's more.
Accused has been arrested and medically examined: Police officer
"The accused has been arrested and has been medically examined. An FIR under relevant sections has been lodged against the accused in Ganderbal police station," a police officer said. The incident had reportedly occurred on Sunday.
Police set up SIT for speedy probe
The victim has also undergone a medical examination, said the police. For a speedy probe, the police have also set up a special investigation team (SIT). The police have registered a case against the accused under Sections 451 and 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) as well as Section 4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO).
Second case of rape of a minor in a week
This is the second case of rape of a minor in J&K in a week. On 13 May, a three-year-old girl was raped allegedly by a local, who claims to be a minor, in Bandipora's Sumbal in North Kashmir. The accused had reportedly lured the victim with some sweets and then took her to an isolated courtyard where he raped her.
Protests across J&K demanding justice for the three-year-old victim
Following the Bandipora rape incident, protests erupted across J&K demanding justice for the victim. Schools and colleges in the region were also closed. Former J&K Chief Ministers Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah and several other leaders have strongly condemned the incident. Political parties, religious groups, and social groups also demanded a fast-track investigation into the rape case.
