J&K avalanche: Three soldiers killed, bodies recovered
Bodies of three soldiers trapped in Jammu and Kashmir's Batalik sector due to an avalanche were recovered on April 7. Two of the five soldiers who were at an army post in Ladakh district when multiple avalanches hit, were rescued earlier. "Unprecedented snowfall triggers multiple avalanches; a Post in Batalik Sector buried, 2 soldiers out of 5 rescued," the Northern Command had tweeted yesterday.
Army comes to the rescue despite danger
Putting their own lives at risk, the army came to the rescue of people trapped in low-lying areas. Rashtriya Rifles troops evacuated residents from Panzipora in Budgam district, and helped locals divert overflowing drains and channels with sandbags.
In January, avalanches killed at least 24 people
Avalanches are common in the region during winters. In January, a series of deadly avalanches killed at least 24, 20 of them defence personnel who were hit in Gurez and Sonmarg regions in two days. Four members of a family also died in Gurez. A massive avalanche in Pakistani Kashmir in 2012 killed 140 people, including 129 soldiers.
