363 terrorists, 71 civilians killed in J&K in 2016-17
As many as 363 terrorists and 71 civilians were gunned down in the last two years in Jammu and Kashmir. Replying to a question by BJP's Sat Sharma, chief minister Mehbooba Mufti recently told the state legislative assembly that 213 terrorists and 51 civilians were killed in 2017 and 150 terrorists and 20 civilians in 2016. Attempts to check cross-border terrorism
According to Mufti, her government is taking several steps to cut down cross-border terrorism in the conflict-torn state. The measures taken include manning the border by security forces, border-fencing and electrification, installing night-vision devices and keeping a tab on infiltration.
Jammu and Kashmir grants amnesty to first-time stone-pelters
In another reply, Mufti revealed that J&K booked and later bailed 11,290 stone-pelters in 2016-17. Notably, the state has granted amnesty to first-time offenders caught between 2008-2017, but only if their parents give an undertaking that the accused would never practise unlawful activities again. To keep youth away from militancy, the Mufti government is surveilling social media, organizing sport tournaments and establishing youth clubs.
1,752 explosive devices, 100 wireless sets also recovered
Meanwhile, Mufti informed that 391 AK rifles, 182 pistols/revolvers, 11 rocket-propelled grenades, three sniper rifles and three 303 rifles were recovered from across J&K in the last two years. The police also found 1,752 explosive devices and 100 wireless sets in this time, reported PTI.
