Ivanka Trump arrives in India for the GES 2017
Advisor to and daughter of the US President, Ivanka Trump arrived in Hyderabad to attend the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) 2017. She will address the inaugural session along with PM Narendra Modi and Telangana CM K Chandrasekhar Rao. This is Ivanka's first visit to India. Earlier, she had said this year's GES is "testament to the strong partnership between India and US".
What is the Global Entrepreneurship Summit?
Co-hosted by India and US, the eighth edition of GES is being organized by NITI Aayog, the External Affairs Ministry and Andhra Pradesh government. It aims to bring together budding entrepreneurs and global business leaders. This time, 1,500 entrepreneurs from 170 countries are participating. Many of the 350-strong US delegation are Indian-Americans. According to Ivanka, "Over 50% of this year's participants will be women."
Ivanka lauds Modi on the eve of India visit
On the eve of her visit, Ivanka said: "As the world's largest democracies...there's much we can and should do together." A prime challenge is "creating economic opportunities and generating prosperity for all," she said, lauding Modi for working towards inclusive development. Talking about her meeting with Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj in September, she said she looks forward to "continuing this conversation with PM Modi".
Ivanka's plans while in India
Ivanka is leading the American delegation consisting of officials, entrepreneurs and businesspersons, many of them women. On November 28, she will participate in a plenary-session on "Women's Entrepreneurial Leadership". She will also attend next morning's breakout session on "Innovations in Workforce Development and Skills Training". One day, Modi will host Ivanka for dinner at the Taj Falaknuma. She will likely do some local sightseeing.
Donald Trump will also participate, but virtually
US President Donald Trump will also participate in the GES, albeit virtually: he will address attendees on November 28 via video conference. Sources said his message on encouraging women's participation in entrepreneurship will be a "short one but effective enough".
'Ivanka, please come here': Secunderabad residents protest bad roads
Meanwhile, Secunderabad residents, led by Congress, protested against their bad roads by putting up posters saying, "Ms Ivanka Trump, please come to this road." They alleged since Ivanka isn't visiting their city, the infrastructure is shabby, unlike Hyderabad and Cyberabad which have gotten a face-lift. Earlier, there was controversy over reports that Hyderabad police had temporarily banned begging and shifted 1,000 alms-seekers to jail-ashrams.
