IRCTC bookings: How to avail train-travel insurance @68 paise
With effect from September 1, 2018, IRCTC (Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation) has introduced new rules for availing train travel insurance while booking online tickets. Unlike earlier, when the service was mandatory and free-of-cost, it's now an optional scheme, being offered at a pretty economical rate of just 68 paise. Here's all you need to know about IRCTC's travel insurance scheme.
First off, what is covered by IRCTC's train travel insurance?
The IRCTC travel insurance provides a coverage of Rs. 10 lakh for death or permanent total disability, and Rs. 7.5 lakh for permanent partial disability, in addition to Rs. 2 lakh for hospitalization expenses, against train accidents, robbery, dacoity, and other such undue events.
Who can avail the IRCTC train travel insurance?
Any Indian Railways passenger can avail the travel insurance service, while making online train ticket bookings via the IRCTC app or website. However, it must be noted that the insurance facility is not in place for children below the age of five. Additionally, the scheme can only be availed by Indian citizens. Foreign citizens are not eligible for it.
IRCTC has tied-up with three travel insurance companies
For the scheme, the IRCTC has tied-up with three insurance companies, namely- Royal Sundaram General Insurance Co. Ltd., Shriram General Insurance Company, and ICICI Lombard General Insurance Co. Ltd. Thus, it is important to note that you're buying the insurance from these companies, not IRCTC.
