India among top 10 climate performers globally: Report
India has retained its place among the top 10 climate performers in the world, according to the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) 2025. The country, however, fell two spots from its previous rank but still managed to clinch the 10th position among 63 countries assessed. The CCPI report highlighted India's low per-capita emissions and rapid renewable energy uptake as key factors for its high rank.
CCPI report evaluates largest global emitters
The CCPI is a joint publication of Germanwatch, New Climate Institute, and Climate Action Network International. It monitors the world's largest emitters' progress on emissions, renewable energy uptake, and climate policy. The 63 countries assessed in this index, along with the European Union (EU), account for about 90% of global emissions.
India's climate policy likely to remain unchanged
The CCPI report also gives an insight into the future of India's climate policy, indicating that drastic changes are unlikely. It expects the country's growth-oriented approach toward climate action to remain or even grow stronger. This is due to factors such as increasing energy demands from industry and a growing population.
No country achieves 'very high' rating in CCPI report
Interestingly, the CCPI report keeps the first three positions empty. This is because no country performed well enough across all index categories to secure an overall "very high" rating. The report's methodology and results underscore the urgent need for improved climate action worldwide, particularly among the largest emitters.
