India is second-most sleep deprived country, claims Fitbit survey
Indians are the least active and second-most sleep deprived people in the world, according to a survey by Fitbit - a renowned maker of fitness trackers and smartwatches. The US-based company has cited a year-long study to reach these rather alarming conclusions for Indians. In terms of sleep quality, India is only behind Japan which has been adjudged as the most sleep-deprived nation globally.
Indians get an average sleep of nearly 7 hours
As per the survey, conducted between August 1, 2018 and July 31, 2019, Japan is the most sleep deprived nation, with an average Japanese getting only 6 hours and 47 minutes of sleep. India, with an average sleep of 7 hours and 1 minute, takes the second place. Meanwhile, Ireland got the highest amount of average night sleep at 7 hours and 57 minutes.
Not only quantity, Indians also don't get quality sleep
"Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep is crucial for emotion regulation, memory, and peak protein synthesis, which ensures that multiple processes in the bodywork properly," according to Fitbit's report. On this parameter, Indians and Japanese managed an average of 77 minutes which is the world's lowest.
India is also the least active country: Fitbit
Further, as per the report by Fitbit, India has also emerged as the least active nation among the countries that were included in the survey. "Indians are the least active and log in 6,533 steps daily, the least amongst all 18 countries which is 3,600 steps lesser than the average of the most active country - Hong Kong," the findings of the report highlighted.
Study findings based on user data analysis from 18 countries
Fitbit has presented its findings as per an aggregated and anonymized user data analysis from 18 countries including India, Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, Spain, the UK, and the US.
