Indian Railways has certain luggage carrying rules for the passengers, under which they can bring in luggage upto certain specified limit free-of-cost, and have to pay extra fees if they carry additional luggage, over and above that limit. The charges depend on the class of travel in which the passenger chooses to travel. Here's more on this.
Free, marginal and total allowance for AC-1,2,3 classes of travel
The free allowance limit for AC First Class is 70 Kgs, marginal allowance is 15 Kgs and maximum quantity permitted is 150 Kgs. For AC 2-Tier, free allowance limit is 50 Kgs, marginal allowance is 10 Kgs and maximum permitted limit is 100 Kgs. For AC 3-Tier, free allowance limit is 40 Kgs, marginal allowance is 10 Kgs, and total allowance is 40 Kgs.
Free, marginal and total luggage allowance for Sleeper and Second-Class
For travel in Sleeper Class, free luggage allowance is 40 Kgs, marginal allowance is 10 Kgs, and the maximum permitted weight is 80 Kgs. Lastly, in case of Second class, free allowance, marginal allowance and total allowance are 35 Kgs, 10 Kgs, 70 Kgs respectively.
Maximum luggage size allowed in passenger compartments
Trunks, suitcase and boxes having outside measurements of 100 cms x 60 cms x 25 cms are allowed to be carried in the passenger compartments as personal luggage. However, in case the trunks or boxes exceed any one or more of these dimensions, such articles are required to be booked and carried in the brake van and not in the passengers' compartment.
Rules about maximum luggage size, children's luggage, brake van charges
In case of AC 3-Tier and AC Chair Car compartments, the maximum allowed size of trunks/boxes/briefcases is 55 cms x 45 cms x 22.5 cms. Children aged between 5 and 12 are allowed half of the free allowance subject to a maximum of 50 Kgs. There is no restriction on the quantity or type of luggage in brake van.
