Passports might not be a valid address proof anymore
If a report by HT is to be believed, Indians might not be able to use passports as address proof soon. The MEA is considering a new series in which the last page, which contains the individual's address, will be removed. All other details of the individual are available on the first page. There are other changes being considered too.
The three types of Indian passports
Passports are currently issued in three colors: white for government officials or those visiting other countries for government work; red for diplomats; and blue for all others. 'All others' is also divided into two categories: people who need emigration check (ECR) and those who don't (ECNR). The first page contains the individual's photo and other details. The address is printed on the last.
The MEA is considering color changes too
The MEA might decide to remove the last page containing the address. This won't affect immigration/security checks as personnel can view details of individuals by scanning the barcode on the passport. The ECR category might also get orange passports. This will let officials quickly decide if emigration check is required or not. All existing passports will remain valid till their expiry.
What documents will then be valid as address proof?
Though passport is one of the most commonly used documents for proving address, you can still use Voter ID, ration card, Aadhaar card, driving license, bank passbook or utility bills (water, electricity, phone or gas) as address proof.
