All about Indian Mujahideen co-founder, Quershi's life
Earlier today, Delhi police had arrested Abdul Subhan Qureshi, the co-founder of the Indian Mujahideen. Qureshi has been wanted for years now for his role in the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts where 20 blasts ripped through the city killing over 50 people. From being a software engineer to be known as India's bin Laden, here's all about his life.
Qureshi's journey as a terrorist began in 2001
Abdul Subhan Qureshi's journey as a terrorist began in 2001 after he left his job at a reputed software company to pursue 'religious activities'. Reportedly, Qureshi was a quiet but good student at Mumbai's Antonio De Souza High School. In 1995, Qureshi obtained a diploma in industrial electronics from Bharatiya Vidyapeeth at Kharghar, and then completed a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) course.
Qureshi is called 'India's Osama bin Laden'
Qureshi has been dubbed 'India's Osama bin Laden' for having successfully evaded arrest for years. He also featured in the National Intelligence Agency's (NIA) most-wanted list, and the agency had announced an award of Rs. 4 lakh for any information leading to his arrest.
Qureshi was part of the now-banned Islamic group SIMI
After his professional training, Qureshi started working for the IT firm Datamatics. In 1998, he joined the now-banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), and left his job in 2001. SIMI was designated as a terrorist organization in 2001. Qureshi rose in SIMI ranks over the years, and was its top most leader after the arrest of its general secretary Safdar Nagori in 2008.
Qureshi had been living in Nepal under a fake identity
Qureshi came under intelligence agencies' radars when the Indian Mujahideen started claiming responsibility for blasts in Ahmedabad, Delhi, Jaipur, and Uttar Pradesh between 2007 and 2008. It's believed that Qureshi was one of the main brains behind the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts. Qureshi had been living under a fake identity in Nepal, and had also visited Saudi Arabia between 2015 and 2017.
