Minor footballer drowns in Australia; family seeks Rs. 35cr compensation
Delhi High Court has issued notices to the Center, School Games Federation of India, and Delhi Government on a petition seeking inquiry into the death of 15-year-old Indian football-player, Nitisha Negi, who drowned in Australia, while being on a professional tour last year. Negi had gone there to participate in the selection process for Football U-18 Girls in the Pacific International School Games, 2017.
Petition states 'utter negligence and lapses' by officials
The Class XI student was swept away by a storm at the Holdfast Marina beach in Adelaide last December. Alleging "utter negligence and lapses" on part of officials who had taken the participants to the beach, the girl's parents, grandparents, and two siblings filed a petition seeking direction to the Center and Delhi government to conduct an inquiry into the case.
Girl's family seeks compensation of Rs. 35 crore
The plea adds Negi's family had sent legal notices to the authorities seeking compensation of Rs. 35 crore or any other reasonable amount, but no response has been received yet. Meanwhile, Justice Vibhu Bakhru has sought response from Rajkiya Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, where Negi studied.
