India requires $150 billion to bolster defense
According to Dr. Sudhir Mishra, the Director General of the BrahMos missile system division of the DRDO, India's defense requirements over the next 10 years will require massive spending. The distinguished scientist estimates that India would have to spend $150 billion to acquire new, and upgrade existing military equipment.
India is already improving defense
"There are many items which we are going to manufacture or procure. Many of them have already become a reality, such as upgradation of MiG-29 and Mirage aircrafts. We are also going to procure around 500 more T-90 battle tanks," said Dr. Mishra.
Need for defense equipment manufacturing in India
Dr. Mishra stressed on the importance of indigenous defense equipment manufacturing for bolstering India's defense. He said that the DRDO is willing to share technology with private players, should they choose to enter the field. Manufacturing apart, a significant amount would also have to be spent to acquire foreign equipment, especially aircraft, tanks, artillery, among others.
Need for more private players in defense manufacturing
"DRDO is ready to share the technology, as we alone cannot do it. Private players can take that technology from us and develop it for the market. You can approach us and start manufacturing," he added.
