India ranks 109th in mobile Internet-speed, 67th in fixed broadband-speed
India, the largest consumer of mobile data in the world, is again ranked 109th in the mobile Internet speed and 67th for fixed broadband speed globally, according to data from Ookla's Speedtest Index. However, the average download speed over the mobile increased to 9.01Mbps in February from 8.80Mbps in November 2017. Norway is positioned at the top with an average download speed of 62.07Mbps.
Over 1bn people get new data connections
The findings of the report came amid a massive increase in data connections by over 1 billion mobile phone customers in India and an increased thrust on connectivity by policymakers. Niti Aayog Chief Executive Amitabh Kant had in December claimed that India is the highest data consumer in the world at 150 crore gigabytes, which is more than the US and China's put together.
India ranked 67 in fixed broadband category
Last year, the country's rank was 76 in the fixed broadband category, as compared to 67 this year. The fixed broadband download speeds went up to 20.72Mbps in February, compared with 18.82Mbps in November 2017, the index said. Singapore leads in the fixed broadband front, with a download speed of 161.53Mbps. In 2017, India had reported the biggest increase in fixed broadband download speeds.
How does Ookla compare Internet speed data?
The Speedtest index compares Internet speeds data from around the world monthly using data from tests taken by real people, Ookla said in a statement, adding there are 439 Speedtest servers in the country at present.
