Traders demand phase-wise rollout of e-way bill next month

    What's the story

The interstate e-way bill is going to be introduced from April 1 across India.

Traders demanded the process should be 'phase-wise' for smooth implementation, because if it will be executed for all at one go then there is a high probability of system crash.

In GST regime, the e-way bill is required to transport goods worth more than Rs. 50,000.

Don't want deferment of e-way bill rollout: CAIT President

"We do not want deferment of e-way bill rollout but it should be implemented in phase-wise manner," said BC Bharti, National President of Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT).

"On February 15, when the government implemented e-way bill for all, the system crashed. Hence, we have suggested that there should be phase-wise rollout," he added.

    Roll out

'Implement e-way bill for companies with over Rs.100cr turnover first'

At first, e-way bill should be made applicable for companies with a turnover of more than Rs. 100cr.

Bharti said this will take care of a large number of taxpayers. In phases, the slabs could be reduced to cover all companies.

"E-way bill system is to plug tax evasion and with our proposal government could plug tax evasion up to 90%," he said.

Despite GST Council assurance, traders were still apprehensive. Small traders have complained about a lot of problems and harassment while complying with the system as the process is not as easy as the government claims, Bharti said.
