Heatwave alert: IMD issues yellow warning for Mumbai, Thane
What's the story
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow warning for the Konkan belt, including Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Navi Mumbai.
The IMD informed CNBC-TV18 that temperatures are currently 4-5 degrees above average and will remain so till Tuesday.
On Wednesday, temperatures are expected to increase by another 1-2°C.
A slight drop in temperature by 1-2°C is expected on Thursday and Friday, but it won't provide much respite from the heat.

Heatwave-like conditions persist, slight temperature drop expected
Weather stations like Santacruz have reported that heatwave parameters have been met, indicating a heatwave-like condition in the region.
This comes after the IMD's January forecast of above-normal temperatures and below-normal rainfall for February.
IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra had said that most parts of India were expected to witness below-normal rainfall, except in west-central, peninsular, and northwest India.

Rainfall record
January records 4th lowest rainfall since 1901
Mohapatra also pointed out that India's average rainfall in January stood at 4.5mm, making it the fourth lowest since 1901 and the third lowest since 2001.
India also saw its warmest October since 1901, with monthly mean temperatures about 1.2 degrees Celsius above normal.
November was the third warmest November in 123 years, after only 1979 and 2023.
