IMD issues yellow alert for Mumbai after rain makes comeback
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and its neighboring districts, including Thane, Palghar and Raigad. This warning comes after the city experienced moderate rain on Monday morning following a prolonged dry spell. The alert is in effect until Wednesday for Mumbai and until Friday for the other districts.
Rainfall data and future predictions
An orange alert has also been issued in Thane and Palghar for Wednesday due to the likelihood of extremely heavy rain in certain areas. Thunderstorms and heavy rainfall are forecast in portions of Maharashtra, including Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Konkan, over the next four to five days "due to the interaction between the mid-level easterlies and the dry north-westerlies at lower levels."

Mumbai's rainfall deficit and water stock status
So far, Mumbai has received only 190mm of rain in September, significantly less than the average quota of 360mm. Since the onset of monsoon in June, the Santacruz station has recorded a total rainfall of 2,622.5mm. Between Sunday and Monday mornings, the Santacruz observatory recorded 17mm of rain, while the Colaba coastal station recorded 24mm.
Comparison of current water stock with previous years
On Monday morning, the total stock in the seven lakes that provide the city with drinkable water reached 97.96 percent, or 14.17 lakh million litres, of their total capacity. The overall water stock in these seven lakes has slightly decreased due to the recent lack of rainfall. The water stock was over 98% on the same date in 2022 and 2023.
