IIT-Madras: Student stabs classmate over shared love interest; arrested
The IIT-Madras campus witnessed a bloody and violent Valentine's Day eve after a post-graduate M. Tech student stabbed his classmate, allegedly over a shared love interest. While the victim, 24-year-old Pramod Kaushik from Haryana, is recovering from his wound in a private hospital, police have also nabbed the accused, Manoj, who also hails from Haryana. Here's what went down.
Manoj stabbed Pramod in the shoulder
Reportedly, the incident took place at 5.40pm when Manoj confronted Pramod at the campus library, and rebuked him about his relationship with a female student of the institute. However, the verbal spat soon escalated into a full-blown physical altercation, and in the fight, Manoj ended up stabbing Pramod in the shoulder with a sharp object.
What police had to say about the incident
"They seemed to have liked the same girl from the college and the argument broke out because of that. A team is currently at the campus for further investigations," a police officer told TNM.
A profusely bleeding Pramod had to be hospitalized
After stabbing Pramod, Manoj fled the scene. Meanwhile, students who were nearby rushed Pramod, who was profusely bleeding from his wound, to a hospital in Adyar. The students also alerted the institute authorities about the incident, and the authorities, in turn, called the cops. Subsequently, a team from the Kotturpuram police station was dispatched.
Manoj was arrested while he was trying to flee
When the police reached the campus and heard that Manoj had fled, they initiated a search of the campus. Surely enough, they found Manoj trying to flee the campus, and nabbed the 24-year-old after a brief chase. Manoj has been booked under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code.
