Javedkar inaugurates IIT Jammu
Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar unveiled the transit campus of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Jammu. Ninety students are scheduled to attend its first academic session. Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh said the IIT campus has "marked a new chapter in the development of J&K and is a step closer to promote the state as a new education hub."
IITs: India's education at its best
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are self-governing public institutes of higher education. They are administered by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 which declares them as "institutions of national importance". The act also lays down their authorities, responsibilities, and structure for governance etc. There are 23 IITs in India (including the new ones scheduled for inauguration in 2016) so far.
MoU for IIT Jammu signed
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed in the presence of Deputy CM J&K Dr. Nirmal Singh for setting up of IIT Jammu. Singh said the Government would set up IIT Jammu with "highest standards parallel to other IITs in the country." He said with the setting up of IIT Jammu the students won't have to go far off places to study.
Bill introduced to get 6 new IITs under IIT Act
A bill aimed at getting the 6 new IITs as well as the Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad under the purview of the IIT Act was introduced in the Lok Sabha. HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar, introducing the bill said the new institutes require to be "brought within the ambit of the aforesaid Act for the purpose of declaring them as institutions of national importance".
Lok Sabha passes bill for 6 new IITs
The Parliament passed a bill that will pave the way for 6 new IITs, including the ones at Jammu and Tirupati. As per the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Bill 2016, new IITs will also come up in Palakkad, Goa, Dharward, and Bhilai. HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said the Government has earmarked Rs.4035 crore to the IITs as against Rs.3855 crore in 2015.
Rajya Sabha gives its nod to IIT (Amendment) Bill
The Rajya Sabha gave the final approval for the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Bill 2016 by voice vote "with IIT campuses being set up in Jammu and Tirupati." Furthermore, while responding to a discussion conducted on the bill, Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Prakash Javadekar maintained that the "IITs are the centre of excellence and they will continue to remain like that."
The present campus a transit campus
The campus inaugurated by HRD Minister is the ad interim campus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Jammu and "will function from a well-equipped temporary campus in Paloura, Jammu."
