Engineering sucks, writes IIT-Guwahati student in alleged suicide note
A first-year engineering student allegedly committed suicide in her hostel room of IIT Guwahati on Wednesday, as she was didn't want to study engineering. Sanjib Saikia, Additional Superintendent of Police, Kamrup, said a suicide note was found near the body which read, "Engineering sucks". The student belonged to Karnataka and was pursuing Mechanical Engineering from the prestigious college. Here's more.
When roommate returned, the student didn't answer calls
Saikia said it seemed the student was suffering from depression. "She also wrote about how she could not fulfil the expectations of her parents," he added. An IIT spokesperson said her roommate had gone out, and when she returned, the door was locked. When after repeated calls, the student didn't answer, she went to hostel security staff. With the help of local police, they broke the door.
Student attended counseling session, there was nothing unusual: IIT spokesperson
When they entered the room, the police officials and security staff found the student hanging from the ceiling fan. Further, the IIT spokesperson revealed the student had joined the college barely one and a half months ago. She had even undergone the mandatory counseling session, he added. He revealed 4 counselors were employed for 6000-students. "Nothing abnormal was noticed in the interaction," he claimed.
