The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D) is going to introduce new degrees and various short-term certificate courses in the upcoming academic session. The institute will also be starting a program called 'Professors of Practice', which will allow working professionals to teach at the institute. V. Ramgopal Rao, the director of IIT-D, recently made the announcement. Here are the available details.
A committee will select teachers for this new program
Talking about it, Rao said, "This program will be started to encourage people working in various industries to come and teach our students." "There will be a selection committee to assess whether they are experts in their fields and if so, they will get the opportunity to teach at IIT-D," he added. Short-term courses, meanwhile, will "enable working professionals obtain a degree from IIT-D."
Short-term courses can help one earn a degree from IIT-D
Talking about the short-term courses available for working professionals, Rao said, "Through these short-term certificate courses, students can move up and finally get a degree if they crack the examinations held." According to the director, it is a way of broadening the institute's base. "Our motive is to bring good institutions in Delhi under the same umbrella," he said.
Plans in pipeline: Minor degree program on entrepreneurship, Ph.D incubator
This plan will enable the involved parties to "use each others' resources for projects that have social relevance. Now our research is focused on the needs of the industry which have social relevance," Rao pointed out. Among other plans, introducing a minor degree program for students in entrepreneurship is being thought of. Moreover, plans for a Ph.D incubator are also in the pipeline.
IIT-D also organized 15th Open House to show ongoing research-projects
Through this initiative, students will be offered fellowship opportunities and resources for their start-ups. On Saturday, IIT-D organized 15th Open House, where several departments exhibited over 60 demonstrations of ongoing research, which was attended by over 4,000 students from 100 schools. "The idea is to inspire and motivate students towards science and provide them exposure to the latest research at IIT-D," Rao said.
Research projects ranged from footwear dryers to foldable bicycles
Different varieties of research projects including intelligence vehicle monitoring systems, footwear dryers and foldable bicycles were showcased at the Open House. Two students of IIT, Arpit Singhvi and Hemant Kumar Nama, developed the project of the 'Foldable Bicycle with Chainless Drive'. This would enable people to carry the cycle inside a bus/train because of its collapsible wheels and a foldable frame.
