    What's the story

A 21-year-old IIT-Delhi student was founding hanging from the ceiling fan in his hostel room. The deceased, Gopal Maloo from West Bengal, who was a first year Masters student in Chemistry at IIT-Delhi, left behind a suicide note.

He wrote he was a victim of sexual abuse.

Incidentally, he had attempted to commit suicide by consuming a large number of sleeping pills, just three days back.

    Suicide note

What the student said in the suicide note

Maloo's suicide note suggested that he took the extreme step as he was unable to cope with the trauma of being sexually abused during childhood by two of his older cousins.

Maloo, despite coming out of the trauma, continued to be haunted by the memories, and was depressed when he came to Delhi.

In the note, he asked for the forgiveness of his family.

    Quote

IIT-Delhi wasn't aware of Maloo's depression, says DCP

"We were later told that the young man was depressed and was seeing a doctor. The institute was not aware of his problem as it is difficult to know of these issues unless the student opens up to us," said DCP Milind Mahadeo Dumbere.

    Investigation

Police are exploring options of filing a sexual abuse case

Maloo's body was found by his friends, following which they informed the police.

His older brother told the police that Maloo had attempted to commit suicide on Tuesday by consuming sleeping pills.

Following that attempt, he was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital, and later discharged.

Police are now looking to see if a sexual abuse complaint can be lodged based on the suicide note's contents.
