IISc-Bangalore, IIT-Bombay rank among world's top 200 engineering, tech universities
IISc-Bangalore has been ranked among the top 100 universities in the world in the subject category 'Engineering and Technology' in 2019 Times Higher Education rankings. In the same category, IIT-Bombay ranked in the band of 151-175, while IIT-Delhi, and IIT-Roorkee were in the 201-250 rank band. Following them were IIT-Kharagpur, IIT-Kanpur, and IIT-Madras, which were ranked in the 251-300 band. Here are the details.
38 Indian universities featured in the 2019 engineering, tech list
A total of 38 Indian universities were among the world's best in the 2019 'Engineering and Technology' subject ranking. Apart from the aforementioned Indian universities, the newly-established IIT-Indore, in the rank band of 301-400, was the only other Indian university to feature within the top 500. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, IIT-Bhubaneswar, IIT-Guwahati, Jadavpur University, and NIT-Rourkela, Pondicherry University, Sri Venkateswara University, and Tezpur University were in the 501-600 rank band.
Indian universities had ranked higher last year
That said, Indian universities actually slipped in rank, compared to their performance in the 2018 'Engineering and Technology' rankings by Times Higher Education. IISc-Bangalore slipped from =89 rank in 2018 to =95 this year. Similarly, IIT-Bombay slipped from the 126-150 rank band in 2018 to the 151-175 rank band this year. IIT-Kharagpur and IIT-Kanpur also slipped down one rank band.
Who were the 2019 'Engineering and Technology' toppers?
The University of Oxford topped the 2019 'Engineering and Technology' list, followed by Stanford University and Harvard University. CalTech, MIT, University of Cambridge, Princeton University, National University of Singapore, ETH Zurich, and Georgia Institute of Technology made up the rest of the top 10, respectively.
How Indian universities fared in overall world rankings
Earlier in September, when Times Higher Education had released its World University Rankings, IISc-Bangalore had been the highest ranked Indian university in the list, being ranked in the 251-300 rank band. The newly-established IIT-Indore, surprisingly, was the second highest ranked Indian university in the list. While IIT-Indore was ranked in the 351-400 rank band, while IIT-Bombay, and IIT-Roorkee made it to the 401-500 rank band.
Record 49 Indian universities had made it to world rankings
A record 49 Indian universities had featured in Times Higher Education's 2019 World University Rankings, marking a small, but significant improvement from 2018 rankings which had seen 42 universities feature.
