Not free yet, haven't been able to meet husband: Hadiya
Two days after proclaiming that she wants to be with her husband, 25-year-old Hadiya says she still isn't free as she hasn't been able to meet Shafin Jahan, her husband, yet. "I asked for freedom. I wanted to meet my husband but the fact is I'm not free till now, " she said. Hadiya is currently in the care of her dean.
Hadiya was Akhila, a Hindu woman, before her marriage
Before getting married to Shafin in December 2016, Hadiya was Akhila, a Hindu woman. Furious about her religious conversion, Hadiya's father approached the Kerala HC, which annulled their marriage in May'17, calling it a classic case of religious indoctrination. Shafin then moved the SC, challenging the HC order. The apex court asked the NIA to probe the case.
Hadiya alleges torture by family
Shafin, however, alleged Hadiya's family had ketp her captive and wasn't letting her meet him despite her wishes. In the meantime, an activist released a video of Hadiya, where she purportedly alleged her father was abusing her. She also alleged threat to her life.
Hadiya can meet anyone but with my permission: Principal
Two days ago, finally appearing in front of the SC, she said she wants to go back to Shafin and continue her education. She says what she's asking for isn't anything exceptional and in fact, such rights are enjoyed by all citizens. The Principal of Sivaraj Homeopathy Medical College, where she's studying, has said she can "meet anyone" but with his permission.
