Hyderabad: Daughter critical after father attacks her over inter-caste marriage
In yet another horrific incident, a 20-year-old woman was attacked by her father in Hyderabad on Wednesday for marrying a man against the family's wishes. 20-year-old Madhavi and 21-year-old Sandeep got married last week, and her father Manoharachary called the couple to speak with them. He ended up attacking them, and now Madhavi is critical. Doctors said her right hand was almost chopped off.
Manoharachary first attacked Sandeep, then went after daughter Madhavi
Manoharachary called the couple to meet near an automobile showroom on SR Nagar Road. ACP Vijay Kumar said he ambushed the couple from behind. He first attacked Sandeep and after he fell, he went after his daughter. Using a machete, he hacked Madhavi and struck her repeatedly. He then fled the scene and locals took them to hospital. CCTV camera captured the assault.
Doctors prepping for complicated surgery to save Madhavi
Madhavi was admitted to Somajiguda's Yashoda Hospital in critical condition. Her hand and ear were almost chopped off, and a vein behind her neck cut. An official said they are prepping for a complicated surgery, which might last 10 hours, to save her. "She is in physiological and mental shock. Besides the loss of blood, she could suffer infections too," a doctor said.
They knew each other since long, got married recently
Madhavi belonged to OBC community and Sandeep to SC. They knew each other for five years now and married after finishing undergraduate courses recently. Sandeep's brother said they anticipated trouble, but didn't expect things to go so far. His brother said their father passed away 10 years ago. He added Sandeep worked at a biryani restaurant in Moti Nagar and earned well.
Sandeep tells police Manoharachary never threatened him
An injured Sandeep filed a written complaint with the police. He told authorities Manoharachary never threatened him, so when he called for a meeting he had no reason to refuse. Both the families were called to SR Nagar police station for counseling about inter-caste marriage. Manoharachary was arrested on Thursday. Earlier, a Dalit man was killed for marrying a girl from another community.
