Hyderabad: 21-year-old engineering student dies after abortion
A 21-year-old engineering student, K Harika died on Monday after doctors attempted to terminate her pregnancy which was more than 20 weeks old. Apparently, police have now filed a case against the doctors of Anusha Maternity Hospital and Nursing Home as abortions cannot be performed on fetuses older than 20 weeks. The victim's family members demanded action against the doctors for the illegal abortion.
Harika died due to excessive bleeding
Harika and her partner, S Madhu had approached the private hospital for an abortion on August 5 to which hospital superintendent Dr. Girija Rani had agreed and asked to pay Rs. 20,000. Reportedly, the abortion failed and Harika suffered from excessive bleeding. The hospital staff thereby asked her partner to shift her to another maternity hospital at Dilsukhnagar, where she was declared brought dead.
Case registered, investigation underway, say police
Vanasthalipuram police inspector S Murali Krishna said that a case under Section 312 and 314 of the IPC has been registered. Meanwhile, police have shifted Harika's body to Osmania Hospital for an autopsy. Both the hospital superintendent and her partner have been taken into custody for questioning. Police are also verifying whether the hospital violated the guidelines of Indian Medical Council for conducting abortions.
