Delhi: Newly married man seeks divorce from social-media addict wife
Social media ruined this man's married life and he decided to do something about it. So he filed a divorce petition in court, seeking divorce from his social-media addict wife. Delhi resident 30-year-old, Narendra Singh approached the family court and told how his wife, whom he married not more than a year ago, showed more interest in the virtual world than the real one.
Wife's late night WhatsApp chats with male friend troubled husband
In his petition, Narendra alleged his wife didn't spend time with him since the first day of marriage. He even claimed the marriage hasn't been consummated. The husband said his wife's late-night WhatsApp chats with her male friend troubled him and when he confronted her, she threatened him with dire consequences. Narendra's counsel Manish Bhadauria said the court has accepted his client's petition.
While Narendra was accommodating, his wife showed little interest
Bhadauria alleged Narendra gave enough time to his wife to adjust to new home. "But spending time on social-media and ignoring household responsibilities as a wife had become her habit," Bhadauria further said. She apparently prohibited him from spending time with other family members. Meanwhile, the wife's lawyer has denied the allegations. The court asked the couple to attend a counselling session in July.
Even counselors are stunned with social-media induced marriage problems
The rising number of divorces due to social media addiction has alarmed many marriage counsellors. Earlier, reasons for marriages breaking up were property disputes or dowry or family arguments, counsellor Pooja Mehta said, but that has changed now. She added, "When couples spend more time on social media, communication gap becomes quite natural." Mehta also said social media leads to unrealistic expectations from spouses.
Earlier, SC prohibited a couple from posting images online
Notably, even Supreme Court understands how social media is affecting marriages and divorces in the country. Annulling a marriage, recently, the apex court forbade the couple from sharing pictures of each other on social media. In this case, the court observed both parties abused each other online and posted vulgar messages. The time to get off social media to save relationships is now!
