Indian Railways: Here's how to use free Wi-Fi at stations
Recently, the Indian Railways proudly announced that it has provided free Wi-Fi facility to more than 1,000 railway stations, across the country, so far. The service, being offered through RailWire, the retail broadband initiative of RailTel, aims to connect as many as 4,791 stations to Wi-Fi throughout India. Here's how you can use free Wi-Fi service at stations.
Public response to the service
The free Wi-Fi service by Railways is receiving tremendous public response. By February 2019, the total number of unique Wi-Fi users was computed to be more than 11 million, and the total aggregated data consumption exceeded a whopping 9,000 TB.
How to use the service
All users with a smartphone and a working mobile connection can access the RailWire Wi-Fi at railway stations throughout country. Once you are at a Wi-Fi enabled railway station: First, go to your device's Wi-Fi Settings, then select 'RailWire' network. Next, open 'Railwire.co.in' on your browser, enter your phone number, and click on 'Receive SMS.' Now, enter the received 4-digit OTP code. Press 'Done'.
Free Wi-Fi at stations is helping people in unexpected ways
Ever since the free Wi-Fi service by Indian Railways was started, many heart-touching stories around the change brought about by it, have surfaced. For instance, a Kerala coolie cleared Kerala Public Service Commission (KPSC) by studying at the station using Wi-Fi service. In another case, a lady auto driver visited the nearby railway station to download educational content for her school-going son.
