8 tips to drive safely on foggy roads during winters
More than 9,000 car accidents happen in India, every year, on account of fog. Foggy weather can be a dangerous time to get behind the wheels, as the visibility gets considerably reduced. It is advised to stay at home during such conditions. However, in case you must go out, follow these 8 simple driving tips to stay safe.
Drive slow; Maintain good distance between vehicles
1) First things first, driving at your regular speed isn't a good idea during foggy weather. Drive slow, so that you have enough time to react when a vehicle or a speed breaker appears. 2) Pile-ups often occur in fog. To avoid this, maintain good distance between your vehicle and the one ahead, to give yourself control and the required reaction time.
Use low-beam headlights; Take advantage of defrosters
3) To improve visibility for drivers, it is advisable to use low-beam highlights, while driving in fog. Avoid using the high-beam as the fog reflects this light back, further hindering your vision. 4) Use your windshield wipers and defrosters to get rid of the moisture and ice that may set on the windshield and hamper your vision.
Stick to your lane; Always use the indicator
5) On the foggy road, it might get difficult to spot a vehicle shifting lanes. So in order to stay safe, it is better to stick to your lane, as long as possible. 6) While making a turn, switch the indicator on, at least 10 seconds in advance, so that the drivers behind you have enough time to react appropriately.
Avoid overtaking; Do not lose focus
7) The key to driving safe in fog is patience. So, it is advisable to avoid overtaking, at all costs, as it can lead to collisions. Remember the age-old phrase: Better late than never! 8) Minimize your distractions, and stay totally focused on the road. When it's foggy outside, even a minor distraction could prove to be a grave mistake.
